as berlin art week begins, the konrad fischer gallery has invited the haubrok foundation to showcase artwork from the haubrok collection in sporadic intervals at the top floor of their former substation site. the haubrok foundation has been prohibited from hosting exhibitions at the FAHRBEREITSCHAFT for more than a year, due to decisions made by the district administration of lichtenberg.
the first exhibition opens alongside berlin art week 2019 and runs parallel to the works of carl andre in konrad fischer gallery. the exhibition will show works by austrian artist rudolf polanszky and lamps by franz west. both artists were an inspiration to each other. whereas west sought after a meteoric career, polanszky refused to follow such a path. this is evident in his works as well, which largely evade all sense of meaning – one of the reasons why he has remained relatively unknown until now.
rudolf polanszky works with poor, found materials. coincidence plays a large role in his creations, yet polanszky takes it a step further. some of his works were created in the darkness, others during his sleep even. they cater to epistemological principles and mathematical backgrounds. the result shows itself not only as pig fat or coil spring drawings but also in confusion sculptures and hyperbolic spaces.
franz west created a large body of lamps and furniture pieces, aside from the work he made in a more classical sense. the former exhibition pieces serve to showcase the relationship between the two artists in the proper light.
