Under the theme of democracy in a time of growing social tensions, the exhibition "Are We Still up to It? – Art & Democracy" presents over 50 major works from the Modern Art collection of the Pinakothek der Moderne in this group exhibition in the historic unfinished rooms of Herrenchiemsee Palace. Ten chapters highlight the importance of creative self-expression, the fundamental values of our constitution, and the possibilities for social participation. The works exhibited span the arc from classical modernism to the present day and engage in an impressive dialogue with the extraordinary architecture of the palace, referencing the 1948 Herrenchiemsee Constitutional Convention.
Alongside pieces from the collection, the impressive staircase features a display of works by Paloma Varga Weisz — one of today's leading sculptors, posing existential questions with a sensitive approach to materiality and surreal elements in her poetic works.
