Jan Dibbets at H’ART Museum, Amsterdam

"Toward Another Photography" at H’ART Museum, Amsterdam revisits a decisive phase in the oeuvre of Jan Dibbets (born 1941), when he abandoned painting in favor of photography. Spanning from his first perspective corrections in 1967 to the color studies of the mid-1970s, the exhibition traces how Dibbets critically examines the photographic apparatus and, in doing so, has fundamentally redefined photography as an artistic medium. Bringing together photographic series produced between 1966 and 1976 with documents and archival materials, the exhibition situates his work within the international artistic developments of those decades—a historic period marked by the rapid emergence of conceptual art, arte povera, and Land Art. Rarely shown film and sound works, as well as installations and sculptures from these formative years, offer deeper insight into the breadth and experimental nature of his practice.

The exhibition is curated by Erik Verhagen.
